Linen can be traced back to ancient times, The Pharos produced linen for the aristocracy. The Romans also manufactured and used linen. In the late 17th century the Huguenots, expelled from France built the frame and reputations of Irish Linen. Up to the 19th century the making and growing of linen was a family tradition and the skill of growing and ‘scutching’ was passed down from father to son. ‘Scutching’ is a process of drying , crushing and beating to separate the fibres from the woody material. •Linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant, the fibres are combed and twisted and then spun into yarn. •The yarn is then put on weaving machines which today are electronicallly controlled looms. Patterns are now designed on computers.
